This course is an overview of American public policy and government, focusing on the impact of policies on social, economic, and political issues. It will examine the intersection of religion and politics, fiscal and monetary policy, welfare policies, the tax system, regulatory policy, and trade agreements. The course will illustrate the wide-ranging effects of policies with specific examples such as the 2008 economic downturn and climate change. The student will learn about the nature of U.S. fiscal and monetary policy, the structure of the U.S. tax system, the basis for partisan divisions in regulatory policy, and the evolution of America as a trading nation. The course will also provide an understanding of the fragmented power structure of American government and how it affects politics.
